Itinerary (the details)

If anyone reading this is interested in following all or some of our footsteps in Peru, here are the details. I heartily recommend our travel agent, Mauricio Guzman at Peru Discover (http://www.perudiscover.com/), who is actually located in Costa Rica. He is responsive via email (mailto:mauricio@perudiscover.com), and also has a toll-free number from the USA: 800-485-2846. He subcontracts out to Lima Tours, whom I suppose you might also contact directly in Peru (011-511-424-5110) or via their Web site http://www.limatours.com.pe/index01.htm.

A word about the itinerary. Buy travel insurance. We didn’t, and we almost lost part of our trip as a result. Or if you don’t buy travel insurance, don’t book the travel too tight. (Please note that we were booked to arrive in Lima at 4am and to depart from Lima to Arequipa just two hours later. Don’t do this.) Or if you do book things tight, make sure your travel agent has a 24/7 number—and get lucky. We did… but I’ll let Adam tell it.

(from Adam’s livejournal of August 26th: Synchronicity):

This trip has been subject to a few odd coincidences. For one, I was reading Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series at its beginning - as, it turned out, was my mother, completely independently. The currency in Peru? The "nuevo sol" - new sun.

Also. My uncle was quite convinced that the itinerary my mom had emailed him had us flying to Peru via New York, which was just not the case; we were going via Miami. Then our plane out of Boston was so severely delayed because of weather that they had to re-book us on a different route. Which went Boston - New York - Lima.

Maps

Thanks to Lima Tours for their informative booklet, from which most of these maps were taken. Thanks too to the Sanctuary Lodge in Machu Picchu for the map of that site and for a stay that was our big splurge of this trip and one of our all-time best stays ever, anywhere.
